HOCKEY GM ADVICE
The Boston Bruins have arguably the best top line in Hockey, which Marchand, Bergeron & Pastrnak. While this line is absolutely lethal and has led them to many victories, it takes more than a top line to win you games when it matters most. And judging by the photo below, the Bruins are very much lacking scoring depth besides for their second line center David Krejci.
Besides Krejci, their top scorer from the bottom 3 lines is Jake DeBrusk with 16 points, that is just not enough for a team that wants to win a Stanley Cup.
Now… are you ready to really hurt bruins fans?
Back in 2015 when General Manager Don Sweeney took over the Bruins, he made 3 trades that everyone questioned, and at the time though he was insane.
First: he traded the young high scoring defenceman Dougie Hamilton to the Calgary Flames for a 2015 1st round pick, 2015 2nd round pick & 2015 2nd round pick.
Second: He traded fan favourite Milan Lucic for Martin Jones, Colin Miller & 2015 1st round pick.
Third: He immediately flipped Martin Jones for another First round pick and Sean Kuraly.
Giving the Bruins the 13th, 14th & 15th pick in the 2015 draft, and what turned out to be the 29th pick in the 2016 draft.
The Bruins went OFF THE BOARD for every one of these 4 picks. Picking:
13th: Jakub Zboril
14th: Jake DeBrusk
15: Zachary Senyshyn
And in 2016 choosing: Trent Frederic 29th overall.
Of these 4 players, only Jake DeBrusk has a full-time spot in the NHL but has not panned out to what the Bruins thought. Now for what hurts. What could have been ….
In 2015, immediately taken with the 16th pick was Matthew Barzal … Ouch.
Players that could have been drafted with these three picks:
Mathew Barzal - Career GP: 124 Career Points: 123
Kyle Connor - Career GP: 137 Career Points: 91
Thomas Chabot - Career GP: 102 Career Points: 63
Brock Boeser - Career GP: 103 Career Points: 88
Travis Konecny - Career GP: 192 Career Points: 98
Sebastian Aho - Career GP: 201 Career Points: 159
I would say these players would have definitely added some scoring depth to the Boston Bruins.
Move on to the 2016 draft with the 29th overall pick .. they could have picked:
Alex DeBrincat - Career GP: 126 Career Points: 86
Could you even imagine a second line of Aho - Barzal - Boeser and then having DeBrincat on the third line with David Krejci.
What could have been Boston… What could have been.
