Team Power Rankings: The Calgary Flames #22
Last season was a bit of a disappointing one for the Calgary Flames. They had so much potential coming into the season and then ended up finishing 20th. This season is no different, they have high expectations coming into the season and for good reason. Their young players have another year of seasoning under their belt, they made a huge free agent signing bringing in the real deal James Neal. But this team also traded away their leading defence point producer in Dougie Hamilton. But in this trade they brought in youngster Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm. Who both are still under the age of 23, so there are very high expectations for both of these players.
But the question still is, can this team keep is together long enough to make it to the playoffs? They rely heavily on their top 2 players in Gaudreau and Monahan and hopefully with the additions of Neal and Lindholm that can take some pressure off the big two. Having Tkachuk healthy for a full season should help as well.
An important question to is how well can Smith play this season? He had a decent season his first year in Calgary but I think this season he will be average at best.
Unfortunately for the Flames, while they have improved their offensive roster quite a bit, so have the other teams in their division and I think they will still be behind the Ducks, Sharks, Kings and Knights and even the Oilers in the fight for the playoffs.
My apologies Flames fans, but this will be another year without the playoffs.
