Hockey GM Advice trade proposal:

It has been awhile since I have done one of these so lets get every rev’d up today!

Todays trade is going to be between two teams who are moving in opposite directions. One is moving into a rebuild, while one is trying to be a Stanley Cup contender.

For this trade to work, both players will need to move their No-Trade Clause, or lets assume both left the other team off their no trade list.

Today’s trade will be between the New York Rangers and the Edmonton Oilers.

One thing everyone thinks the Oilers need is depth on the wing, fast and skilled players to play with McDavid, well that’s not the area im addressing here, as I believe Puljuajvi and Yamamoto will be ready to step into those roles this season!

A potential Top 6 looking like either:

Nuge – McDavid – Puljuajvi

Yamamoto – Draisaitl – Rattie

Rattie – McDavid – Draisaitl

Yamamoto – Nuge – Puljuajvi

So I am pretty confident offensively with those 2 top lines, with Lucic, Rieder, Strome & Caggiula in the bottom 6. So where I am addressing is the back end.

What I think the Oilers need is a puck moving purely offensive defenceman. Klefbom, Larsson, Nurse are all great 2 way defencemen and Russell is a great shot blocker, but they are missing that guy to run the Powerplay and produce points.

This is where I believe Kevin Shattenkirk will come in handy, a guy known as a powerplay specialist. He has expressed he wants to be on a team that is a Stanley cup contender and the Rangers are no longer that, so who better to join than the team with the best player in the NHL.

But what will it take to get him from the Rangers? Well, with them entering a rebuild, I would expect that a first round pick will be required and also a roster player. While “tanking” is not a term teams want to use, with Jack Hughes being the prize in next years draft, the Rangers would love to get in on that. So a perfect strategy would be to get Sekera in return. Sekera will be out for months with an injury, leaving him not able to help produce any wins for the Rangers.

Leaving the Rangers with a better chance at Jack Hughes next season. But when Sekera returns he will be able to play a key role in the veteran leadership on the backend of the rebuild.

So in conclusion:

The Edmonton Oilers will receive: Kevin Shattenkirk

The New York Rangers will receive: Andrej Sekera + First round pick.

This giving the Rangers another draft pick in the first round for their rebuild, and a very good defenceman, and giving the Oilers that puck moving point producer they desperately need.

Oilers back end looking like:

Klefbom - Larsson

Nurse - Shattenkirk

Russell - Benning
