The first thing im doing on this team is salary dump. I am trading away Lucic and Sekera.
Both still have value, but your return will not be what fans will hope. But we will leave the Lucic deal for the very end so everyone can see my idea.
First Lets trade Sekera.
My goal is to make this the quickest team in the league. We just saw what Vegas could do pushing the pace, well we are going to do this with Edmonton!
Step 1: New Jersey had an amazing season last year, and they are going to build on that this year. Edmonton will be trading Sekera to the Devils for Brian Boyle and a 2019 2nd-round pick.
Immediately freeing up 2.75mil of cap space. Giving them 12.8mil in cap space to ATTACK free agency!
Step 2: My first free agency addition is a right handed D who can run their powerplay, exactly what I thought was needed last year. And this guy is Mike Green. Giving them a proven offensive defencemen who can product and eat up 22+ minutes a game and immediately filling the space of Sekera, and Green is from Alberta, giving Edmonton the upper hand. I would expect to sign him for around 4.5mil per season for 3 years. Leaving them with 8.3mil in cap space.
Step 3: Next I am signing another free agent who has amazing speed and can put the puck in the net. Michael Grabner. He had 27 goals each of the last 2 seasons, so even if he can put up 20 that will be a great boost for Edmonton. He is also a great penalty killer. I would sign him 2-3 years for 2.5-3mil per season leaving the Oilers with lets say 5.35mil in cap space.
Step 4: Im adding a player that has been a proven asset in 2 successful playoff runs. Carl Hagelin. Hagelin has one year remaining on his contract at 4mil and Pittsburgh will be looking to shed this contract anyways. The Oilers will trade the rights to Anton Slepyshev and a 2019 6th round pick to the Penguins. This leaving the Oilers with 1.35mil in space.
Step 5: This is going to be the blockbuster, and people are either going to hate or LOVE this trade. We are trading Milan Lucic & Kailer Yamamoto to the Arizona Coyotes for Dylan Strome & a 3rd round 2019 draft pick. This gives the coyotes another star young forward to continue building with, and an experienced veteran with a physical presence to protect their young stars. This also gives the Oilers a upcoming star player who has not quite been a force in the NHL yet, but has been tearing up the AHL and has proven chemistry with Mcdavid already.
This trade also frees up 6mil cap space giving them Oilers 7.35mil to resign their RFA’s.
Step 6: final step, with the signing of Finnish goalie Koskinen, Montoya is no longer needed, so we trade him to the Washington Capitals for a 5th round pick, freeing up an additional 1mil.
Grabner - Mcdavid - D.Strome
Caggiula - Draisaitl - Puljujarvi
Hagelin - Nauge - R.Strome
Kassian - Boyle - Rattie
Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Green
Russell - Benning
