Peter Chiarelli Needs To Go!

Peter Chiarelli is the current General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers, a team featuring arguably the best player in the NHL if you are talking to anyone but a Leafs fan. But the Oilers are currently sitting 25th in the league, now how can a team that features players such as McDavid, Draisaitl & Nugent-Hopkins be sitting so low? Well, the answer is a lack of depth in the organization.

This is what the currently line up looks like:

So, after looking at this lineup, here is the kicker. Chiarelli has done everything to ruin the Oilers depth since arriving. His first trade he made as GM of the Oilers was with the New York Islanders on June 26, 2015, trading a 1st round pick & 2nd round pick for defenceman Griffin Reinhart. Well, guess what, Reinhart is now in the minors in Vegas and guess what those draft picks turned into? Matthew Barzal (the reigning Calder trophy winner) & Mitchell Stephens.

Another move he made was trading defenceman Justin Shultz to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 3rd round pick, and what did Schultz do after that? Oh, only put up 51 points in 78 games for the Penguins.

Okay, lets pretend these 2 trades weren’t so bad, let’s skip to June 29, 2016. Chiarelli trades Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils for Adam Larsson. What did Hall do last year? Oh yeah, win the Hart trophy by putting up 93 points in 76 games.

Depth in the organization is getting thinner and thinner.

Now, lets skip to June 22, 2017. Now he trades Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders for Ryan Strome. Eberle last season put up 25 goals and 59 points in 81 games for the Islanders, while Strome put up 36 points in 100 games before now being shipped to the Rangers.

So explain to me how the Oilers are supposed to compete when their scoring keeps getting shipped away.

Here is what a 2018 Edmonton Oilers roster could have looked like:

Hall - McDavid - Draisaitl

Caggiula - Barzal - Eberle

Rieder - Nugent-Hoptkins - Puljujarvi

Khaira - Brodziak - Kassian

Klefbom - Schultz

Nurse - Russell

Gravel/Sekera - Wideman

I dont know about you but that looks like a deep roster to me! You could argue the only positive moves he has made is bringing in goaltender Cam Talbot who is now unable to find his game, and Patrick Maroon who is now on the St. Louis Blues.

February 18, 2011 - He traded Blake Wheeler & Mark Stuart to the Atlanta Thrashers for Rich Peverley & Boris Valabik. - Wow. Loss there.

July 4, 2013 - He trades Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley & Ryan Button FOR Loui Eriksson, Joe Morrow, Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser. Again… Ouch.

The ONLY trade you can argue this guy has won is on September 18, 2009 he traded Phil Kessel for 2010 1st round pick (#2-Tyler Seguin), 2010 2nd round pick (#32-Jared Knight), 2011 1st round pick (#9-Dougie Hamilton). BUT every single one of these guys are no longer on the Bruins.

I think its time for Peter Chiarelli to give up on his General Managering.
