DFS Playbook: Tuesday, January 22, 2019

With the NHL’s All-Star Break approaching, there are fewer and fewer games each night. I am going to switch things up a little bit from the usual full lineup that I build. Instead, I’m going to give you my top 5 value plays of the night and then my top 3 players who you should try to get on your roster. Props to you if you get all three on your team!

Value Plays

Jordan Oesterle, D, ARI, $4,000

This 26-year old D man hasn’t had a very exciting season until his last 7 games or so. He has 2 goals and 6 points in his last 7 games and has seen ice times as high as 23 minutes, averaging around 21 minutes of ice time in these 7 games, which is 3 minutes more than his season average. Oesterle picked up two assists in Sunday’s win in Toronto and will look to continue this scoring pace against the Ottawa Senators tonight.

Michael Frolik, RW, CGY, $4,500

Although you’re not quite getting a huge value with Frolik, a guy who is almost a point per game in his last 10 isn’t so bad. If you got him 10 games ago, you would have only been paying $3,100 for him, which was where the value really was. But he’s still worth looking at with his 9 points in 10 games.

Lawson Crouse, LW, ARI, $3,300

The 21-year old has 4 points in his last 3 games and is beginning to heat up. Crouse logged over 15 minutes of ice time in his last game, which was his highest since Oct 23. Going against the lowly Ottawa Senators tonight, he might be worth rostering in some GPP contests.

Cal Clutterbuck, RW, NYI, $2,900

Clutterbuck netted two goals during Sunday’s win over the Ducks. Now with 4 goals and 7 points in his last 10 games (and only worth $2,900 on DK), Clutterbuck is certainly worth looking at as a value play in Chicago tonight. Although only a fourth liner, Clutterbuck has seen his ice time rise over a minute above his season average of 13.4TOI/game.

Nino Niederreiter, LW, $4,600

Nino was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes just a few days ago and was set on a line with Aho and Williams ahead of Sunday’s game in Edmonton. Niederreiter then showed why the Canes traded for him as he potted two goals, both assisted by Aho. There seems to be some chemistry forming between these two forwards as they are set to play together on the first line again tonight in Calgary.

Top Players for your Roster

Jonathan Toews, C, CHI, $5,800

Captain Serious could almost be a value pick at this price tonight. Only $5,800 for a guy who just put up five points in his last game, not to mention his 5 goals and 13 points in his last 10 games. Toews is certainly a guy you should be thinking about rostering tonight – especially at this price. Hmm.. Perhaps there’s another Blackhawk to pair him with?

Mark Giordano, D, CGY, $6,600

Giordano finds himself on a 7-game point streak, with 13 points during it. He is the most expensive D man on tonight’s slate, but if you picked a few of the value picks above, you may be able to afford a few of these high-priced superstars.

Patrick Kane, W, CHI, $8,000

Kane is on an 8-game point streak where he has scored 7 goals and 20 points. He comes in potentially facing a hot goal in Robin Lehner tonight, but we all know Patty Kane is capable of putting up points on any goalie who tries to stop him.
